THE MADRAS Craft Foundation, in association with `The Friends of DakshinaChitra', instituted an annual award for excellence and achievement in traditional performing arts of India. The first award was presented to Sambandan Thambiran of Purisai village, Cheyyar Taluk, and his Therukkoothu group Purisai Duraisamy Kannappa Thambiran Parambarai Therukkoothu Mandram in recognition of the achievements of his father, a renowned theatre personality who had recently passed away, and to Sambandan for his own achievements.
Award for excellence
This year, the recipients of the `DakshinaChitra Virudhu' are Ammanur Madhava Chakiyar, the seniormost exponent of Koodiyattam and G. Venu, director, Natanakairali, for his efforts in promoting Koodiyattam, Nangiarkoothu and reviving Paavakathakali, the glove puppet theatre of Kerala and other lesser known performing art forms of the region. He has taken initiatives in getting a new generation of artistes trained in this form of art to keep the tradition alive. Venu, a koodiyattam performer himself, has also several books to his credit. The award will be presented by Padma Subrahmanyam, director, Nrityodaya, on March 12, 7 p.m. at DakshinaChitra, East Coast Road, Muttukadu. The presentation will be followed by a Koodiyattam performance of `Abhijnana Shakuntalam'
