BELOPERONE GUTTATA is a delightful plant that belongs to the acanthus family. Its common name, shrimp plant, comes from its flowers, which are really bracts that are pinkish orange in colour, similar to shrimps. A combination of green leaves and pinkish red to yellow tinged bracts make the plant attractive. There is also the Beloperone lutea, which has greenish yellow bracts.
The plant grows rapidly, and it is wise to inspect bought plants to see if they are pot bound. If so, they must be re-potted at once or else there will be leaf discolouration and then the plants could wither.
Needing plenty of space and water and generous feed, the B. guttata can be easily propagated by cuttings. If the plant becomes straggly and therefore unattractive, one can take recourse to trimming.
A bushy appearance is what makes the plant a winner, complete with profuse coloured bracts. A sunny position will help the plant to look its best. A potted border can be aesthetically combined with low growing annuals to have long-term colour in the garden.
