THE SHORT film, long given step-motherly treatment, has come to its own with Ashwin Kumar's The Little Terrorist being nominated for an Academy Award this year.

Hyderabad has a strong connection with the genre, which is being celebrated with the eight-day Hyderabad `I' Documentary and Short Film Festival. Organised by the Hyderabad Film Club (23730841/31020243) to coincide with its 30th anniversary, the films will be screened from March 15 to 22 at Bhaskara Auditorium, B.M. Birla Science Centre, Adarshnagar from 6.15 pm.

The festival will showcase the best of documentaries made by Hyderabadis including those who are from the city who made it big in other cities and those who have made the city their home.

The list of participating filmmakers is a veritable who's who - from Shyam Benegal to Zafar Hai and M.F. Husain and promising young talent like Shravan Katikaneni, Sarat Chandra Parsa and Anantu.

The filmmakers will introduce their films and take questions after the screening. Starting with the opening film - Zafar Hai's Hyderabad: A Place in Heart followed by Shyam Benegal's Satyajit Ray, the festival promises an oeuvre that will have film buffs asking for more. So all ye cinephiles make an appointment with cinema in your little black books from tomorrow!
