Love on the fast lane

Relationships are not meant to be worn on your sleeves. They have to be nurtured, says Shreyoshi

A BOY in Delhi downloaded intimate pictures of his girlfriend onto the Net. That was shocking, to say the least, considering how the girl must have trusted the boy.

This is a depressing indicator of the paucity of emotions that define our times. The incident reminded me of what Robert Greene says in 48 Laws of Power: "... You have more to fear from friends than from enemies."

We are increasingly hearing of lovers, spouses, and friends who can't be trusted. All these make you wonder if man is poverty-stricken at heart, even as he makes great advances in technology. Why is it that we no longer treasure relationships? We talk of even relationships as "time pass", unwilling to spend time and energy on them. Like we have fast food, we have relationships that are served up in a jiffy and they don't do much good to the system in the long run. Relationships happen over a few lines of email, a hurriedly sent SMS, or a quick cup of coffee in a swanky café. "Casual dating" is in and most want to just "have fun". "Break ups" happen as quickly and as casually as "link ups".

Several relationships are worn as conquests on the sleeves. We no longer seem to have the time to nurture relationships, carefully and over a period of time.

At the end of the day, you wonder if words such as "love" and "relationship" can be anything beyond pretty words in a greeting card. Granted it is a fast-paced world and everyone wants to be the first to reach for the skies.

But should we get there at the cost of something as tender and beautiful as emotions?

Sound Off! is your space. Feel strongly about something? Mail us at bangaloremetro@thehindu.co.in and who knows, you might be featured in this column.
