Get behind the wheel

Driving instructors need to be totally professional.

THINK DRIVING instructor and the many stories of unpleasant tutors who insist on placing their hand on yours while teaching you to shift gears, come to mind all too easily. In order to be really effective, driving instructors need to be highly qualified and professional in their approach. Recognising this is car leader Maruti which now offers driving instruction as a career option, placing it on a level never seen before in India. Driver training schools will be set up across India in a phased manner over the next few months. Unlike many driving schools that teach just the basics and manage to secure customers a licence, Maruti promises to be different.

The objective of this, officials say, is to improve the standards of driver training in the country thereby bringing down the number of accidents, reduce road congestion and make driving more decent and peaceful. Ambitious goals, these and in order to achieve them, Maruti has devised an entire training module.

All candidates who qualify as instructors will be required to train for two weeks at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in New Delhi. In addition to giving driving training, instructors will be required to provide theory lessons and guide trainees on state-of-the-art simulators which give an idea of real road conditions.

Maruti is also on the lookout for women who want to train to become instructors, since they can assist the many women who have been so far afraid to get behind the wheel even though they may have a car at home.

In order to apply for a job, the candidate needs to be a graduate, have a valid driver's licence for the last five years, a passion for driving and a flair for teaching. Apply at dts@maruti.co.in.
