Many issues, many voices
Clockwise: N. Sumathi, Tejal Shah, Natasha Mendonca and Floy.
THIS PROMISES to be an interesting collage: music, video, poetry and issues of gender, human rights and sexual minorities. Sakhiri, a multi-media presentation put together by a foursome, makes space for multiple voices.
After collecting material through various meetings and workshops with women activists and hijra groups and individuals in Bangalore, the artistes present different music compositions that treat and transfigure the collected sources, testimonies and poems. Poetry is performed and sung, interacting with video. The audio-visual material for this performance has been collected over a period of one and a half year.
Part of the troupe is Floy, a French artist and bass guitarist involved with the all-women band Mafucage. With her is Sumathi, who has been learning Hindustani music for 20 years and has been involved in several experimental programmes. The other team members of Sakhiri are Tejal Shah, a visual artist, and Natasha Mendonca, who has studied social communication. Natasha and Tejal have co-founded Larzish, India's premier international film festival of sexuality and gender plurality.
Sakhiri will be performed at Alliance Francaise on March 19, at 6 p.m.
