Live off the land

ALL WHO are feeling miserable about missing the handicrafts fairs over the last month need not fret as here is another chance to indulge in the myriad beautiful crafts the country is heir to. Organised by Kala Srusti, dedicated to improving the lot of craftpersons from Andhra Pradesh, the fair has over 150 artisans displaying the wares.

While the usual suspects like kalamkari paintings and durries, Rajasthani silk paintings, wooden lacquerware and fabric from Mangalagiri, Pochampalli, Venkatagiri, Narayanpet and Gadwal are available in a eye popping ranges, there are other stuff that you could give a dekko.

There are some cheerfully cheesy satin cushions for Rs. 125. If you ever harboured a secret desire to lie around on the divan like a Hollywood diva, then these colourful satin cushions with smocking on them are just the ticket. The Narsapur lace cushion covers are a good buy. The slightly bigger than usual size with delicate embroidery and edging is beautiful. Tops and salwar kameez material with Kashmir embroidery is a cool summer option. And for those who obsess about their looks, there is a whole range of aloe Vera products. And even if you are not a tray person, do spare a glance at the dainty hand-painted trays on teak and you are sure to become a convert.

All who wish to go in for super cool accessories have a whole wide world of choice including anklets made of an interesting mixture of gold, silver, white metal, brass and copper.Contrariwise people spare a glance at the plastic bonsais. They are just so kookie that they are adorable and the best thing is you are not torturing trees. The fair has something for everyone and if by picking up these divine trinkets, you are helping an artisan, then you can feel very pious as you indulge in that bit of shopaholism!
