Go get a life, man

If a man has no clue how to deal with a woman, he's better off watching football on the tube, says Meghala Nair

Meghala Nair: `You asked the girl out, so pay up, dear.'

THERE CAN'T be two bosses in a relationship. Actually there can't be even one. If a relationship has to work, both the man and the woman have to share responsibility equally and switch roles constantly. (Well, more often than not, the woman has to be on top, I would say!) On a more serious note, both have to be adaptable to change, open to giving each other space to be themselves.

In an article in this column (Oh girl!, MetroPlus, March 7, 2005) Karthik T. says that relationships don't work. That's your take buddy, because, you make it or break it. And then you make a broad generalisation like "Women are confused." Whoa, all I can say is that you've just dug your own grave! I am not even being a feminist, but just a realist here. Is being confused only a woman's domain? Aren't men confused? And oh yeah, about us taking on the troubles of the world. We do that because we believe we might actually get somewhere by resolving the problem.

And about the business of guys paying for coffee, dinner, dessert, whatever, that's often because they choose to. You asked the girl out, so pay up, dear. By the way, I have loads of friends who go dutch each time they are out with their boyfriends, and many a time only the girl pays. So let's not go ahead and generalise and say women expect men to pay. A lot of women these days are independent and even fiercely object when the boys insist on paying.

And if you still have a problem, mister, what stops you from buying a CD or going out with your guy friends or watching a football game on the tube? You choose what you want to do with your time. No girl is going to stand in front of you and holler: "Hey there, take me out!"

All I can say is: go get a life! Sorry to see that the Indian male has still not come of age.

Sound Off! is your space. Feel strongly about something? Mail us at bangaloremetro@thehindu.co.in and who knows, you might be featured in this column.
