More on lead

AS I read the article on lead toxicity (Leading to Death, MetroPlus, March 16), I thought it was necessary to inform women about a more dangerous aspect of the subject: Nail polish and other cosmetics used to give or add colour are a major source of lead poisoning.

Long term exposure to such articles, specially during pregnancy, can be dangerous. Those with the habit of biting nails or those who paint nails on the hands used for eating should watch out, particularly. Lead that gets into the system through this route may cause severe deformities to the child, mainly malformation of the kidneys.

Instances of a highly dangerous complication of the kidneys called Hydronephrosis, caused by lead toxicity, is alarmingly high in newborn babies in recent years.
