A thrilling contest
The air was electrifying at the Gurazada Kalakshetram on last Saturday evening.
Thirty-eight colleges and 110 professionals clashed for the top honours to be crowned as the Best Singer and Dancer of Vizag. This contest which kicked off on the ides of March culminated in a mega finale which was not just colourful and glamorous but beset with pulse and exuberance of youth.
The contest was adopted by Bajaj Auto who used this sizzling platform to celebrate the occasion of Bajaj being declared 'Bike No.1' in the country in three categories.
The auditions which stretched over three full days saw more than 300 enthusiastic young artists literally fighting tooth and nail for recognition.
The karaoke singing round drew a lot of response and participants enjoyed the melodies of old Hindi film music right from Kishore Kumar to Kumar Shanu.
A total of 85 semi-finalists thrilled the audience and the judges - Jija Valsraj, Asha Jain and mariner Muralikrishna - had a tough time to announce the 10 finalists.
In the Western and folk dance category, 110 dancers were auditioned and two teams and nine solo dancers reached the grand final.
The mega finals were adjudged by cine actress Jyoti Yadav and playback singer ijayalakshmi, whoe were also the chief judges in dance and singing categories.
The judges, too, performed in this event accompanied by the Hot Steppers, Millennium Band and D.T.S. Anand, to name a few, making the evening a total family entertainment.
The following is the list of winners making to the finals:
Solo singing: I Prize - Randhir (South Eastern Railway); II
Shilpa (Gowri Degree College); III Tulasi Bhaskar (Police Dept.).
Solo dancing: I Prize Chandu (Muralikrishna College; II Sona Goud (Hyderabad); III Chinnari and Deva.
Group dance: Looks Group.
Duet: Nandita and Sekhar (Steel Plant).
The cine music director, Ramana Gogula, has invited the winners to audition with him for his next pop album based on Vizag! A great opportunity for the youth of the city and a thrilling treat awaits connoisseurs.
The doyen of Telugu theatre, Lanka Satyanand, was felicitated by the Mayor, Rajana Ramani, and the Bajaj Auto regional manager, B.K. Senapati, for his outstanding contribution in the cine training field.
The dance choreographers, M.S. Suraj and Rajsekhar, were presented with the 'Best Choreographer' award.
Age was no bar for audience participation during this event and the camera caught both young and old Vizagites dancing to the lilting tunes.
