Metro cultural round-up

Dr. N. Srinivasa Rao

The talk on `Nitya Jeevitamlo Haasyam' (humour in day-to-day life) by the noted physician and connoisseur, Nandivada Srinivasa Rao, that was replete with subtle humour and evocative narration of some incidents that evoked instant laughter was the highlight of the monthly meet of the Creative Comedy Club held last Sunday.

It got off to a grand start with the welcome presented by the club president, Taalabhaktula Lakshmiprasad, and witnessed the participation of about 40 enthusiastic young men and women who cracked jokes with finesse. Some of them did so exhibiting their talent in mimicry in lighter vein.

The doyen of the theatre and playwright, L. Satyanand of 'Bommalaata' and 'Gangireddaata' fame, who was the guest of honour, critically reviewed some of the performances. P. Bharathi from the adults and Santoshkumar from the children's wing were adjudged the best by Kone N.V. Anjaneyulu, another guest of honour.

The programme that was conducted under the expert guidance of the popular cine comedian, Kallu Chidambaram, had the privilege of being witnessed by noted personalities of the city, Avasarala Ramakrishna Rao, Pinninti Babu Rao, Koganti Vijayalakshmi, Prabha Sarma, P.A. Bhaskara Rao, Raapati Appa Rao, advocate B. Sudhakar and the likes.

The editor of 'Vidhivilaasam', Chinta Prabhakara Rao, and Moturi Sivarama Krishna gave away the prizes to the winners. The club's founder-secreatry, Meda Mastan Reddy, proposed a vote of thanks.

Visakha Royal Cultural Academy featured a vocal recital by the founder-principal of Sangeetha Janakulam and senior most vidwan, I.V.L. Sastry, in the premises of Mihira Dhyana Mandiram in TSN Colony, under the aegis of its founder and 'Mihira' editor, M.R.L. Rao. The Nritya Kalaa Bharathi music teacher, K.V.S. Prasad, on the violin and the M.R. Government Music and Dance College lecturer, G. Venkata Rao, on the mridangam kept excellent company while Akundi Venkata Rao and G. Sarada Subrahmanyam helped keeping and indicating the beat.

Sastry, who turned 79 on Wednesday, and thrilled all alike with his excitingly evocative recital like a singer in his prime. Getting off to an evocative start with Sri raga varnam prefixed with an invocatory slokam in praise of Lord Vinayaka, he went on sustaining the tempo rendering next the Aarabhi Pancharatnakrithi of Tyagaraja, 'Saadhinchene', followed by the delineation of Hindolam in detail for 'Maamavathu Sada Saraswathi', coupled with neravu and swaram, and elaboration of the popular Reethigowla krithi 'Janani Ninu Vina' in the first half.

Absorbing expatiation of 'Tulaseedalamulache' (Mayamaalavagowla) and 'Nidhichaalaasukhama' (Kalyani) of Tyagaraja replete with expression of excellent manodharma marked the second session. Mellifluent rendering of the slokam `Nikhilanilayamantram' in Punnagavarali as prelude to the Tyagaraja krithi 'Namonamo Raghavaya' constituted the tailpiece that transported the mood bordering realms of ecstasy.

The accompanists Rao not only lent commendable support but also seemed to excel each other in their turns. While Prasad attracted repeated applause for his sweet raga delineations, Venkata Rao traversing both gathi and yathi with acumen in his thani contributed splendour.

It is equally gratifying to note that many a youngster like K. Ramakiran, K. Sridevi, L. Satish, G. Sumagirija, M. Anuradha and G. Srinivasa Reddy from the Lebenshilfe Institute for the Mentally Challenged children are to stage a dance ballet, and

T.S.S. Shanmukha, T.N.B. Phanindranath, M.L. Prasanna and P.V.S. Nirupama are to enact some parts of the play, 'Bhakta Siriyala',

as part of the Madras Telugu Academy's the marathon show of cultural events for the ensuing Ugadi Puraskar presentation function to be held at the Madras Music Academy Auditorium at Chennai on April 3.

Their talent was spotted by the MTA founder-chief-convener, T.V.K. Sastry, during his recent visit to the city.
