Band of bikers

The Wanderers celebrate their third anniversary tomorrow with a trip to Nagarjunasagar

COME SIX O CLOCK on Sunday evening and there is a beeline for the third parking lot at the KBR Park - and it is not just a coincidence that a group of Bullet bikers are all headed in the same direction. These are the Wanderers - if you catch them looking admiringly, it must be at a new machine that has joined their group and not the pretty young thing jogging along!

This mixed group of professionals and students from different fields quite easily exchange notes here for over an hour each weekend. They are hard-core Royal Enfield enthusiasts who share a common passion for riding, going the long haul and talking shop. This is where motorbikes are appreciated, new technology debated, innovations tested and plans hatched for rides to new destinations for longer durations. They also swap personal experiences of exciting rides undertaken in the week and enjoy a patient hearing from fellow Wanderers.

The Wanderers were the largest team outside of Mumbai to participate in Royal Enfield's Rider Mania 2005 and member Ajay Sharma aged 24, bagged the Best Rider Award at the event. Manish, one of the 37 riders who was part of the team said, "More than the event, the team spirit that everyone exhibited while riding from Hyderabad to Mumbai was awesome. We all looked out for each other constantly, perhaps that contributed to an accident-free ride, says Vinod, an employee with Systel.

Refreshing right

Irfan, a young HR lad confessed surprise that "after the 12 hour ride I expected to be tired but instead I was refreshed. Royal Enfield undoubtedly is the `doer of the road." Wanderers believe in following traffic rules, wearing helmets and riding within speed limits. The Hyderabad RTA showcased them last year during the Road Safety Week for responsible riding and following safety regulations.

When Chatterjee relocated to Hyderabad in 2002 he had the brain wave of starting a club of Bullet owners and what began with two bikers has grown to 200 strong in the city. He believes that after a tough day at work, a ride on his Bullet is all he needs to de-stress.

Imran, a techie from Chennai joined Oracle Hyderabad two years ago and met up with Wanderers "they are my most trusted buddies" he says.

And this instant bonding with fellow Bullet brothers is a common feature whichever city one is in. All though they don't all land up for every meeting, the net keeps them well connected.

The Wanderers are riding to Nagarjunsagar tomorrow to celebrate their third anniversary. If you are inclined to be part of this wandering pack, be informed of the criteria - show up with a Royal Enfield, have a backpack handy, take time out on Sunday evenings and besides fuel, tank up on a spirit of adventure (being single or married to a bike-friendly partner is certainly a plus point!)
