Birthday bash

HARIHARAN IS turning 50 on April 3. Vijay TV is organising a show "Isaiodu Piranthen" to celebrate the occasion on April 2 at YMCA grounds, Chennai.

A galaxy of singers such as S. P. Balasubramiam, Chitra, Sujatha, Tippu, Harini and Mathangi will come on stage to wish and sing with him.

Stars such as Madhavan and Kushboo will also be there.

Hariharan will sing his hit numbers and a few ghazals. The show will be telecast later on Vijay TV.

Those who are interested in watching "Isaiodu Piranthen" live can get passes from the channel.

The competitors

"KOFFEE WITH Karan" continues its dream run on Star World though, of late, it has become repetitive. Now, Times Group-promoted "Zoom", the entertainment and lifestyle channel, is coming out with something similar but said to be more glamorous — "Just Pooja". It is a gossipy chat show which started last Saturday, 10 p.m. on "Zoom", hosted by former actress Pooja Bedi. And the guest for the first episode was Salman Khan who proved to be witty and spontaneous. When asked about his two ear rings the controversial star said: "After wearing two ear rings I have become more balanced." All the chat shows are Bollywood-centric and are trying to lure the premium metro audiences with a mix of English and Hindi. Karan Johar's show is a huge success mainly due to his industry connections as a director and producer, which means all actors close to him will be featured in the show. Now "Zoom" and Pooja Bedi are cultivating those who are not in the Karan Johar camp!

Sting Operations for TRPs?

STAR ONE, Star Utsav, Zoom TV, India TV, Travel & Living... the list of channels launched last year goes on. They are all competing with one another to make their presence felt in the Hindi television market, which is controlled by the big four — Star Plus, Sony, Zee and Aaj Tak. The list is likely to grow what with new channels on the anvil. In this scenario, how does a new channel survive? Some of them like India TV, controlled by Rajat Sharma, are trying to create a sensation by having a special programme on the Bollywood casting couch. Suhaib Ilyasi and the little known India TV hogged the headlines with their sting operation on Bollywood stars Shakti Kapoor and TV star Aman Varma. But how long can they continue to expose the dark side of Bollywood?
