Less ad space

I ENJOY reading the Metroplus but I find too many advertisements in your paper. Although it may bring tremendous revenue, half-page ads leave little space for articles. And it is for these articles that one buys the paper. Do try to limit them.

Amazing maize

YOUR ARTICLE in the Green Notes column (Get corny, March 14) on the abundant uses of maize was interesting to read.

Silk tales

I AM a Kannadiga visiting relatives in Hyderabad. In your article (Crafts galore, March 15) you had mentioned that saris with kasuti embroidery were available. I wish to add that Kasuti embroidery is done by very poor womenin poor work conditions. At the Heritage Festival these works were promoted by H.V. Shivappa, known as the silk doctor (Ph.D. in silk) who has taken up the cause of these women.

Lamb to the slaughter

THIS IS with reference to your Animal Talk column (The silence of the lambs, March 24) in which, Amala Akkineni had written that animals are slaughtered by two accepted methods, jhatka and halaal. In the jhatka method the head of the animal is severed in one blow and the jugular vein is slit in the case of halaal. Packaged meats in stores are marked with a red dot indicating the non-vegetarian contents of the package but whether the product is halaal or jhatka is not clarified. As the eating of a particular type of meat is religious taboo for some sects this issue ought to be addressed. Also food outlets in India should clearly specify the type of meat being used in their preparations.

Whatever next?

IT IS disturbing that men are taking a feminine interest in beauty products (My fair lad, March 23). After all, who are these metrosexuals trying to please and attract? Certainly not most women who love grace in men. What else will follow this? Gay marriages?

Water woes

YOUR ARTICLE, Water, water, everywhere? (March 21) was an eye-opener. It is surprising that the Constitution has not solved the problem.
