Taste the valour

COURAGEOUS COMMONER: Sushil Kumar in New Delhi. Photo: Shiv Kumar Pushpakar.

HIS COURAGE won him the day. The winner of the regional round of "Thums Up Everest Challenge-Hai Dum", Sushil Kumar is a resident of the Bayana village in Ghaziabad. He gave a remarkable display of skills, strength and stamina beating 500 contestants including expert mountaineers and seasoned adventure sports enthusiasts. The 19-year-old rode away with Royal Enfield Thunderbird bike.

A mechanic by profession, Sushil says, "I work on daily wages to help my family. One day as I was passing through the Ramlila ground near Kavi Nagar, I saw Thums Up posters with my favourite hero Akshay Kumar. That made me participate in the competition." He was put through challenging tests and exciting manoeuvres.

He says, "I had to climb a prototype of Mount Everest (16ft high dummy) placed on the road show van and retrieve the Thums Up bottle from top besides running with load, Tarzan rope swing and zigzag running. I did this in 58 seconds." Determined to win the competition he adds, "It is the sheer support of my father that I am here talking to you now. I couldn't have even imagined that I would reach this level in my life and make my family proud." All motivated by his favourite actor Akshay, Sushil states, "If I won ten lakhs, I will donate a portion of it to the deprived and if I won't get a job I will start on my own business and most importantly I'll help my family and my small sister in her higher studies."

Having tasted the sweet success in the regional round, Sushil is now all set to blast in the final challenge camp to be held at Shivpuri, Uttranchal. He will undergo training under the guidance of Colonel Kumar, an expert in mountaineering expeditions. Good luck!
