Twin success

FOR A search on `twins', Google returns 8,410,000 links in exactly 0.20 seconds. For `international twins festivals', the search engine lists 339,000 links in 0.12 seconds.

This goes to underline the widespread interest around the world in the amazing world of twins and multiples.

But in India, issues concerning twins and multiples have not received enough attention. Two twin sisters from Palavakkam, who are founders of what is called Twins India Foundation (TIF) and who last year won three international twins events in a row, are running from pillar to post to put together India's first "World's Twins Festival". Where? In Chennaipattinam.

"Hundreds of twins around the world were enthused by the idea of a visit to India when we wrote to them about the event," says one of the twins, Sunitha Royappa.

However, carrying this idea forward, it seems, will take some doing. For months now, Sunitha and her twin sister Vanitha have been selling it to corporate houses. A few have evinced interest. A few NRIs are also prepared to throw their weight behind this effort.

"Some of the corporate houses that promised support first insisted that the event be held in Mumbai as the city has more celebrities and theevent could get wider publicity. We, however, insisted that it would not be anywhere else but Chennai. Most of them came around," smiles Vanitha. The three-day event has been scheduled for September, "so that it does clash with the other international twins festivals".
