SITING SMART: Rahul Dev in New Delhi.
IT HAS been a total makeover for him. He is the one with the unconventional looks who created a storm in the modelling industry. His raw, earthy looks set him apart from the rest of the chocolate-faced models. But having entered the Hindi film industry with a commendable performance in Champion, he has never returned to the ramp. Having bagged the Sony Award for the best villainous role in the movie, Rahul Dev remarks, "This movie is close to my heart since it brought me recognition in the film industry."
Present in Delhi to inaugurate Immense Impact `IM', the fitness and wellness store at New Delhi's South Extension-II, Rahul declares, "I am passionate about fitness, and it's a fact as this matches my profile. I constantly hit the gym and do yoga to stay in shape."
Champion may have been a winner, but with a number of box office duds under his belt, Rahul has had mixed fortunes. Currently working in Vikram Chopra's Fight Club, the shooting of which was on in the Capital recently, he explains, "It's a commercial film totally aimed at entertaining the audience. With excellent fight choreography, humour and romance, one will find all the flavours in it. It's a complete package of entertainment."
Talking about his character in the movie he reveals, "I am playing a gangster from Delhi. Suniel Shetty is my colleague, and Ashmit (Patel) is playing my younger brother. Then comes another gang of Sohail Khan, Zayed Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Dino Morea and others. All in all you will find nine faces in the movie who fight among each other."
"Stereotyped audience"
Though he personally prefers cinema with depth, Rahul feels, "Since the audience is stereotyped in India they generally like an entertainment movie rather than meaningful cinema, so I have to do that in order to be in the limelight."
He adds, however, "It's not that I have never done serious movies." Naming his roles in Asoka - The Great and Shaheed Bhagat Singh for which he won accolades, besides Kalpana Lajmi's Kyon, he says, "I have always tried to balance my films and roles. At the end of the day, I'd like to be remembered as an actor, rather than a hero, villain or character artiste."
Eager to do something different in all his films, Rahul reveals, "I have done Ashwini Choudhry's Hum Saya with ZEE T.V., which is again a very sensitive film where I am playing the role of a corrupt father who uses his daughter, and the daughter has another daughter and then the father tries to convince her and the katha follows."
He is ready to take on foreign productions too. "In fact I have attempted an English movie, Cape Karma, which has gone for a festival too. The story is of a retarded person who is married and imagines he is in love with another woman, Maya. His own wife leaves him after encountering his imagination regarding Maya. Maya is a nurse who is also married and is not in love with him. So what happens with this retarded person is left for the audience to decide in the end."
Well, with several films in his kitty, let's hope this versatile villain becomes a champion after all.
