AS THE Internet takes over from traditional sources of information like the encyclopaedia, dictionary and even the classroom, it is also increasingly entering the juicy territory of matchmaking. Gone are the days when the community matchmaker or panditji fished out horoscopes of eligible girls and boys from their bags, or parents parked themselves at the houses of concerned relatives as the entire extended family joined forces to find the right spouse for the eligible youngster.

Now, provided you have access to an Internet connection, it is easy enough to browse websites where matrimonial advertisements along with photographs and full details about prospective brides and grooms are available. And adding to this trend of marriages made in cyberspace is Sycorian Matrimonials, a company that has been making strides since its launch in 1996.

Says Sycorian owner Manish Koshal, "We have a systematic approach, keeping the people's preference in mind, and upgrade our data so as to give the best service to our customers." According to Koshal, the company, incorporated under the Companies Act of 1956, is getting amazing response.

Good omen

Sycorian means white elephant, which is considered a good omen. The company offers three different programmes for matchmaking, and the fee ranges from Rs.11000 to 51000. "We believe that the information provided by the client is true, but in case of doubt we make it a point that whosoever has been registered in our site is verified by the company meticulously. After making the profiles available to the boy and girl, we also arrange meetings so they can interact with each other," reveals Koshal.

As for the future, he says, "We are expanding the business by including around 200 franchisees. We also offer finishing classes for brides and grooms. For instance, tips on dressing, what they should wear on the wedding day. For this we have tied up with some consultancy firms."
