What happens when greens and budding poets meet? The result is `Poetree Garden'
|
No green horns these: members of Poetree Garden
`Poetree Garden' - the name says it all. It is an association of environmentalists, budding poets and book lovers who are all staff members of the University of Kerala. This innovativeness in the name `Poetree Garden,' blending poetry and tree into `poetree,' is manifest in its activities - awards are given for practitioners of diverse fields such as Ayurveda, creative journalism, computer science and cinema.
The venue of the third anniversary of this association was appropriate: an arboreal shade in the Senate Hall Campus. "We cannot yet call it a great literary meet, but a beginning has been made," says P.P. Souhrudan, founder general-secretary.
The group recently brought out an anthology of 117 poems called `Native Petals,' which was released in March, on the occasion of the third anniversary. The involvement of the contributors is not limited to the pen. The contributors shared the cost of publishing the anthology. They also have to sell a specific number of copies. A World Anthology is scheduled in early 2006.
"When you turn to nature, you naturally learn to love human beings," says G.P. Suresh Babu, poet-contributor. Highlighting the need to protect trees, you are reminded that "each of us breathes in the oxygen released by 16 trees."
