My New Playschool — Toddler Talk Range by Marie Birkinshaw; Illustrated by Claire Henley (Ladybird Books; Rs.180; For ages 2+):

With brightly coloured illustrations and basic text, this book introduces children to simple everyday words and objects. It is ideal for pre-schoolers, with little questions to spark off conversation, learning and visual recognition.

Sunu-Sunu Snail — Storm In The Garden by Sandhya Rao; Illustrated by Ashok Rajagopalan (Tulika Publishers; Rs. 70; For ages 3+): Sunu-Sunu is playing with his friends, the ants, when they get caught in a storm. A delightful picture book that introduces children to sound-words and little characters from the animal kingdom, using lovely illustrations and an appealing text. It is also available in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.


Save Our Earth Series — Not A Drop To Drink by Nilima Sinha (Learner's Press; Rs. 15; For ages 8+): Anil is looking for a treasure in the forest using an old map left by his grandfather. Thirsty and delusional, he finds it, only it isn't the gold he had hoped for...A simple story, illustrating the need to conserve.


How Books Are Made by Samuel Israel (National Book Trust, India; Rs. 11; For ages 10+): An interesting and informative book for anyone interested in printing and curious about the process. Simple language and basic historical perspective make this book a light, easy read.

Penguin Readers-Misery by Stephen King; Retold by Robert Waterfield (Longman; Rs. 40; For ages 12+): This adaptation of Stephen King's spellbinding novel will keep you on the edge of your seat. Paul Sheldon, famous novelist, meets with an accident and is rescued by a fan of his, Annie Wilkes.
