An exhibition at DakshinaChitra will feature Alain Danielou's photographs taken during his stay in India
|
"INDIA THROUGH the eyes of Alain Danielou" (1935 - 1955), an exhibition of 40 photographs will be displayed at the DakshinaChitra Art Gallery, East Coast Road, Muttukadu, from April 9 to 24. The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Alliance Francaise of Madras.
Alain Danielou and Raymond Burnier took many photographs during their stay in India and a selection from these will be on show. Besides, the focus will be not only on an unchanging India with its temples and rituals but also on portraits, sceneries and cities.
Danielou was born at Neuilly sur Seine (Paris) on October 4, 1907. A keen sportsman, he studied Indian classical music, learnt to play the veena like a professional and mastered Hindi. He was a music consultant for several films and produced three video programmes.
Danielou got several awards for his contribution to art, music and theatre from prestigious institutions. He died in Switzerland on January 27, 1994. Overwhelmingly convinced of the importance of culture and religion as presented by Hinduism, Danielou always considered himself a Hindu and in his last interview declared "India is my true home."
The gallery at DakshinaChitra is open all days of the week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Tuesdays. For more details contact the Madras Craft Foundation at 24462435.
