Kalamkari, Mughal miniature, tribal motifs and jewellery inspire Shikha Verma's diffusion line

GYPSY SKIRTS and a hint of shimmer captured the boho chic theme that Hyderabadi designer Shikha Verma chose for her diffusion line that was showcased last weekend at Redd. "The theme is Carnival -- celebration of life," says Shikha. The line inspired by tribal and floral motifs, Mughal miniature paintings and jewellery, reflected by the paisley motifs, accents of kalamkari, chic patchwork and eye-catching embellishment on sheer rose pink, lemon yellow and turquoise blue hues of the season, represented a seamless contrast between modernity and tradition.
"The collection is not for a ready occasion. You can mix and match, such as a top with the pant for the party look or with a Capri for the casual wear ," explains Shikha. "I have been working on the line since the past two months on research and sourcing the fabric and jewellery. A lot of art work such as hand painting has gone into the line" she says pointing at a Mughal miniature on a top.
A NIFT, Hyderabad graduate belonging to the class of 2003, Shikha has earlier bagged rave reviews for her Nirvana collection. The current line is promoted by Usha Badruka who will be retailing the collection at her boutique Orange Feathers. Having promoted national designers such as Eccru, Payal and Raaga earlier, "Shikha is a promising designer and very diligent. The line is more for the younger generation. Today's western wear is wacky and naughty, kind of cool. You will see a lot of it in the current line on display," says Badruka. The collection is on view at Orange Feathers (#6, Lumbini Amrutha Chambers, Nagarjuna Circle, Banjara Hills, Tel: 55101237) between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., till April 6.
