Tommy Hilfiger Spring Summer 2005 collection is fun, spirited and easy to wear

IT WAS a night when smoked salmons and white wine did the rounds as sweet notes of Country roads wafted through the air. Last weekend, the Tommy Hilfiger store near the quiet KBR Park was choc-a-bloc with celebrities who came to have a dekko at the Spring-Summer 2005 collection from the designer. In a corner of the store, a window read Elmira NY — the glider capital of America; the milestone in upstate NY where the designer started out in 1969 retailing jeans and bell-bottom pants from NY at his boutique The People's Place.
It was here that he turned down the offer to work as design assistant from big wigs like Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, and subsequently teamed with Mohan Murjani (who owned the license of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans) to lay the foundation for Tommy Hilfiger, Inc. Rest is history. Today, the designer offers denims that are heritage worn and ragged destruct, and more lifestyle clothing for the youth.
This season, the designer brings smarter trousers for men with shirts in 80s and 100s two ply, some with paisley prints and embroidery — orange, mustard, green and turquoise against plenty of white, elegant stripes in power red, lounge shirts, pure linen shirts in yellow and a lot of layering options with trademark tees.
His design philosophy `classic with a twist' reflects in the mostly retro women's wear collection — pleated skirts, curvy pants that end on boot cut, chino shorts in sea breeze that look oh-so-cool with sleeveless jacquard shirts in classic white, twill capris, tees with bikini blue water colour floral print, khakis paired with shirts with tonal daffodils in scallop pink, blue lagoon tops over short shorts for when the sun shines and, finally, black party trousers.
This is a collection that takes you from the poolside to the cocktail hour, definitely fun, spirited and easy to wear. The USP is the sizes. Most of them have XL options.
Who walked the ramp...
If the collection, showcased to audience of the likes of Jennifer Lopez, P. Diddy, Paris Hilton and Janet Jackson, featured Naomi Campbell on the ramp in New York, the do at Hyderabad had Jesse Randhawa, Ella Rock and Muzammil Khan displaying the lines to a packed audience that had a generous splash of film junta, Namrata Shirodhkar, producer Manjula and Trisha included.
The Indian collection has taken inspiration from the international catalogue. But the teeny-weeny blue-and-white check bikini accessorised with a bright orange cropped biker jacket thrown over one shoulder that Campbell sported for the designer is absent; definitely a no-no for Hyderabadi summers.
