Another shot at succes

Allu Arjun is on the threshold of a hat-trick with `Bunny' storming theatres today. Y. SUNITA CHOWDHARY reports

MOST OF our film stars' lives are packaged in more colours and emotions than any of their box-office grossers. The dilemma and challenge of obtaining success on their merit and the pressures of sustaining it are one too many.

Arjun breezed into the industry with Gangotri and the success of Arya made him hot property overnight and with Bunny , Arjun is all set to give Telugu cinema a different high. Arjun feels great about the excellent pre-release curiosity the film has generated. The film, he says, has a very different feel about it in comparison to his other two films. Its success will be a gift for his birthday, which falls on April 8.

Describing Bunny, Arjun says, "this film is anything but Arya. My family believes in a good script and ultimately everything that is attached to it. I am more interested in a hit film than a good film."

Arjun, like any other up and coming star, faces the world with apprehension. "I do feel very insecure, because this is the only craft I know. So many people are going to watch me perform and I have to make sure the film runs for maximum days. To sustain their interest in me, I have to be on my toes constantly."

Reminiscing Gangotri and Arya, Arjun says, "the character in Arya was so close to my real life persona. The director saw me once and felt I was the right guy for the role because my body language was so flamboyant. In real life too I am very peppy and full of life. So I guess my character gelled with the role. Another film which I saw recently was Nuvvosthanante nenoddhantana and was impressed with the hero's role. I felt for a moment that I could have done that. And about Gangotri, there was no thinking twice at that point of my life. The director (K. Raghavendra Rao) was doing his 100th film and I was lucky to be the lead."

Efforts show

Arjun's strength as an actor has definitely improved. "A lot of people said that. In Bunny I have got my dialogues — almost 80 per cent of my shots were okayed in a single take. I did put in effort and did a lot of homework. I practised and concentrated helluva lot."

The title Bunny has generated lot of interest. Arjun explains the funda behind the title: "When we started shooting for the film, everyone used to call me `Bunny', which is my pet name and even in the dialogue sheet same name was used. Eventually while deciding the name of the character, the director felt it proper to retain it. So there's not much to read into it. But somewhere I wasn't comfortable with the title lest people might find it pompous."

With star system on its way out in the Telugu film industry, actors with unconventional looks but loads of talent are not only bagging critical acclaim but also turning into crowd pullers. Arjun is one of them. There was a time he felt he didn't have the looks to draw a female's attention but just watch how his confidence levels have improved. He has worked on his looks too and gives the credit to the cinematographer, "he has done his best to give me a good look and the work is visually exciting. The promos will vouch for that. The film completely belongs to V.V. Vinayak." Telugu audiences all over the world have begun to look on Arjun as screen-friendly and engaging chip of the old block. Unlike newcomers or rank outsiders, he instinctively learnt the ropes of acting and one hopes he stays here long enough to wow the audience.
