Meet Jhanu Hasda who set a world record in the 70 m women's compound bow competition held recently
|
IT WAS a fabulous evening for the 28-year-old Jhanu Hasda when the Jharkhand archer set a new world record in the 70 m women's compound bow competition by scoring 352 points in the national ranking archery circuit tournament at the Lal Bahadur Stadium. But, Jhanu was not aware of the feat till she reached her hotel room late in the evening. What is more creditable for her is that she set this record within six months of switching over from the recurve bow to the compound bow. "I didn't find any problems in adjusting to it," says a modest Jhanu.
Coached by Arjuna Awardee Sanjeev Singh, Jhanu incidentally achieved her best performances in the compound bow as she picked up silver medals in the individual and also the team event of the recently held Asian Grand Prix championship. But this archer coming from a big family of four sisters and two brothers has not found employment so far. "I have been in this sport for more than 11 years. And I have got nothing from it so far," she bemoans. "I will wait till the World Championship and if I don't get a any job, then I will quit the sport," says Jhanu. Her father the only salaried employee in the family has recently retired from TISCO. However, in this hour of joy, she remembers the help and contribution of Jharkhand Archery Association and also of her coach Sanjeev Singh. "It is he who keeps me going all the time. And, on his advice, I decided to switch from the recurve to the compound bow. The major difference is in recurve is there will be stiffness in the releasing fingers while in the compound bow, everything is mechanical but requires better eye-brain coordination," she explained. Jhanu asserts that she is definitely enjoying the switch-over and hopes to win a medal in the World Championship later this year.
