GLOW in summer

Protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun

SUMMER SHOWERS have considerably brought down the soaring temperatures. However, with the onset of summer, the mercury is bound to shoot up again. Besides being hot and sticky, heat causes a number of skin problems as well.

Treatment for skin problems

Beauty salons in the city are all set to help those with summer-induced skin problems beat the heat and stay beautiful as well. According to beauticians, the problems range from the very common suntan to sunburns and pigmentation owing to exposure to the sun, and acne. Moisture loss or dehydration of the skin is also a common problem, which in turn induces dryness. Beauty salons offer a wide range of customised treatment for your skin. The use of the term `facial' is fast becoming redundant; the salons offer `treatments' that are customised. There are experts who analyse the skin type, the category into which your age falls, for instance pre-25, post-25 and so on. The salons have trained experts who assess a woman's skin and then suggest the treatment.

Expert advice

"We assess the skin type of a client and then suggest a treatment as far as the summer treatments are concerned. For conditions such as pigmentation, we do not just offhand offer facial treatments. Our experts are trained to do that, and if the problem is skin deep then we have a solution to it," says Karthika Ajith, a beautician.

The treatment could extend to more than one sitting akin to medical treatment. According to Karthika, there are treatments to hydrate the skin as well since the skin tends to lose moisture during the hotter months. To coincide with the Lakme India Fashion Week, Lakme Salon will launch a new range of mint-based skin care treatments, which will include pedicures and manicures as well.

Anila Joseph, a beautician says, "What we offer is based on traditional and conventional wisdom. During the summer months, I offer my clients body-cooling treatments such as pedicures, manicures and oil massages for the head and a hair wash without the use of a hair dryer. Hands and feet are the extremities of our body, and they need to be cooled if our body has to regulate the heat. Oil massage for the head is very cooling but not excessive use of hair dryers."

Her solution to beat the heat is fruit and vegetable-based facials. Oranges and cucumbers have a high water content, which hydrate the skin thereby replenishing lost moisture and preventing the onset of wrinkles and fine lines.
