Future managers gear up to take the industry by storm
|
ALL THE WORLD'S OUR STAGE. Pic.S. Siva Saravanan.
ABSOLUTE SILENCE greets you as you enter the campus of CBM College of Arts and Science in Kovaipudur.
With the serene beauty of the Western Ghats as backdrop, the management students of the college start off Canteen Chat by talking about jobs. '"We are in the final year. Just one more day to go; so placement figures prominently in our discussion," says Sunil. B. Thomas, a II MBA student.
>Employee or entrepreneur?
And, the preferred destination is Bangalore. "It is the pay scale and weather that lures us to the garden city. We want to gain experience and come back to Coimbatore when it becomes an IT hub," he adds.
A group of girls from I MBA joins the conversation. "There is always a question of doubt whether to become an entrepreneur or an employee. We feel it's better to gain some experience before starting something on our own," says V. Bhavatharani. The group seems to be convinced with her argument.
It's now time to catch up with sports, their favourite topic.
Obviously, Dhoni is the latest sensation. Is the Sania mania over?
"No, it continues ... But, Dhoni is an emerging player with a bundle of talent and he should be given more opportunities," add S. Kamala Kannan and G. Krishnan.
The girls hail from different places and talk about different cultures, festivals and food. Mention food and they start talking about the food festivals in the city and the menu available at the canteen. The vegetable biriyani at the college canteen is popular, they add.
"We also chart out plans to attend such fests," the boys say. The girls prefer staying in the hostel and trying out recipes in the kitchen.
"But, we make sure we don't even touch them," the boys say.
They watch everything on television except serials. "Every day, we have to make a small presentation on important newspaper headlines," adds K. Keerthana.
Ad talk
The recent `Oye bubbly' Pepsi ad, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, gets the unanimous vote as the best advertisement. "Graphics and special effects have been used and the advertisement clearly shows the shift in focus towards products endorsement from celebrity endorsement," says Sunil.
Online trading is another interesting activity that keeps them engaged.
"We buy shares, monitor the fluctuating prices and participate in trading as part of our curriculum," adds Kamalakannan.
Learning about management practices, group discussions, mock interviews, participating in inter-collegiate management meets and browsing the Internet keeps the future managers busy. The students also got an opportunity to visit the Bombay Stock Exchange as part of the industrial visit.
So, what about entertainment? "We do watch movies. Now, analysing minds seems to be the trend. The success of movies such as 7 G Rainbow Colony and Raam only proves this," the girls add.
What's next on agenda? "Pack the bags and start hunting for that dream job," the final year students say.
