Chaya Harish's home made and hand pounded podis, masala and milk powder can add flavour to your food
|
I AM CONVINCED that the kitchen is a storehouse of not just wholesome and delicious recipes but also timesaving ones. That's the reason why I am a fan of women who lovingly and painstakingly feed her family, keeping in mind both nutrition and economy. So the flavours easily come through. I count myself (should I say ourselves) blessed that we have access to these wonderful homely delights. For instance, Chaya Harish's hand pounded sambhar masala (100 gms for Rs. 20) and garlic podi (100 gms costs Rs. 20) taste really good. At our tasting session, I request the talented Chef Murali of the Taj Connemara to give me his opinion on the podis. He points out, "The garlic flavour comes through and the podi goes well with dosas and idlis". Ask for Chaya's tea masala, which will lend a robust flavour to your tea. Chaya has been making these for the past 10 years. She painstakingly hand pounds the finest ingredients and mixes them to the right proportions. Tea masala (100 gms for Rs. 30). In case you are looking for something the kids will like, try her masala milk powder. But you'll have to give her an advance notice because she does not make this powder on a regular basis. Also check out her chaat and subji masala. She will also be introducing some herbal preparations soon. I admire women who share their home-style goodies with others. Should you happen to specialise in them, call or mail me. I'll be happy to write about your preparations after they have been tried and tasted.
