Curtains up...

THEATRE Magic Lantern's Summer Festival features a host of performances

Coming up. The unveiling of three brand new theatre spaces in the heart of the city. A festival of traditional and contemporary theatre, music and technology. And a host of new performances.

The Magic Lantern's Summer festival will be doing more than launching the Alliance Francaise's amphitheatre, backyard theatre and newly renovated auditorium, which by the way has been turned into a `black box theatre,' intended to be a reasonably-priced performance space for theatre groups in the city. It also intends to re-introduce Chennai's champagne and Davidoff audiences to traditional street theatre and koothu. And take contemporary music to audiences of all ages.

The festival begins with a concert by Funky Bodhi, which promises a "heady concoction of traditional and contemporary forms of music." There's also a lecture demonstration by Sudhin Prabhakar on how the latest methods of music composition make it possible to create professional-sounding music with just a home computer.

The English plays include Michael Muthu's "The Bible - The Complete Word of God (Abridged)"and Magic Lantern's Moonshine and Sky Toffee. The Tamil theatre being performed includes "Mazhai" by the Kalai Foundation and "Aravaan" by Moonram Arangu. Koothu-p-pattarai will be staging "Padukalam", based on an episode in the Mahabharata.

Also watch out for "Pathinettaam Por", an all-night theru-k-koothu performance at the amphitheatre, by the famed Purisai Doraisamy Kannappa Thambiran Theru-k-koothu Mandram and "Stories, Lies and Exaggerations", a story telling session by Edgar Ortiz from Costa Rice, who fuses Caribbean rhythms with the Latin American story telling tradition.

The festival has a theatre workshop from April 14 to 23, and a painting workshop from April 25 to 29. Besides, there's "From Luxor Jr. to Nemo", a lecture series on 3D graphics and animation.

Tickets and season passes for Rs. 400, are available at the Alliance Francaise. Contact 30904025.
