Nature or nurture?

Beauty Success of Sindhura Gadde is attributed more to nature than her grooming, says G.V.RAMANA RAO

The day Sushmitha Sen became Miss Universe was a historic one for Indian girls. It was the day the world of beauty pageants suddenly became demystified for them. That day they learnt that even Indian girls could become world-class beauty queens and understood that more than just beauty what's needed was to win in beauty pageants. Ms Sen opened the floodgates and more Indian girls won laurels for the country by virtue of their beauty and brains.

The world of beauty pageants has come up with yet another surprise for the Indian girls. Vijayawada-born, Sindhura Gadde, has done very well for herself and all the small town girls like her by becoming the Miss India World. She will be representing `One billion Indians' at the Miss World pageant to be held in China. Who knows she may be yet another Indian girl to bring back the title like others before her.

Is Sindhura truly a small-town girl? That has become a question to mull. Though she was born in Vijayawada and studied here till seventh standard, she left for New Zealand at the age of 11.

Small town girl

What helped her win the Miss India World? Is it her good breeding and the "memorable years" she spent in this small town? Or, is it the training and grooming she received in New Zealand? Girls in Sindhura's age group seem to have a variety of opinions about the reasons behind her success and what it means to them personally.

Tanmayi, who just finished her intermediate examination and is preparing for the entrance examination to the National School of Law, says that Sindhura has shattered the myth that only girls from big metros can do well in beauty pageants.

It was her childhood in Vijayawada that gave Sindhura the edge to win the title. "The personality of a person is set by the age of 12. After that, it is all training and grooming, she says.

Archana who finished MBA recently says the Sindhura's achievement made her very happy. Sindhura could become a beauty queen not because of her childhood in "conservative" Vijayawada, but her exposure in New Zealand. Given the right kind of exposure, even girls from Vijayawada can become beauty queens, she feels.

Swapna, another management student says it is great that Sindhura won the Miss India World title. Never expected a Vijayawada girl to become a beauty queen and Sindhura would be an inspiration to girls here. Swapna wanted to try modelling as a career, but was too scared of discussing it with her parents. But now she could discuss it with them, because there was the shining example of Sindhura to support her in the cause.

Mahathi studying MA English says the place doesn't matter and that by being self confident and developing love for oneself it was possible for women to become models, beauty queens or anything they want, for that matter.

Subha, a lecturer, says that Sindhura has demonstrated very effectively that girls from comparatively small cities like Vijayawada cannot be underestimated. A place cannot define ones talents.
