Ekbal steers clear of the predictable format
|
Amateur theatre group Sanchaya is holding a three-day theatre festival (on April 26, 27 and 28), featuring plays directed by Ekbal Ahmed, at Rangashankara, J.P. Nagar.
Ekbal, a graduate from the Ninasam, is not just a director who is constantly exploring new ways of reading a text on stage, but also an activist and a painter. Ekbal, averse to walk the beaten track, achieves freshness in thought and content through body language, costumes, sets and concept.
For instance, he lends Chandrashekhar Kambar's Sangya Balya, based on a folk theme, a contemporary touch. The play will be staged by the host group Sanchaya on April 27. Ramachandra Deva's translation of Shakespeare's Hamlet will be staged on April 28 and Sriranga's Kelu Janamejaya by Sneha Samooha will be presented on April 29. All plays start at 7.30 p.m. and each performance will be preceded by Ranga Geethegalu, a presentation of theatre songs. The festival also includes an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by Ekbal.
Director of Rangayana, Chidambara Rao Jambe, will inaugurate the festival with S.G. Vasudev and Dr. Kantharaj as chief guests. The closing session on April 29 will have a discussion on the developments in theatre in the last 25 years. Suresh Anagalli, Shashidhar Bharighat, Chennakeshava, and R. Nagesh will participate. The session will be moderated by director B. Suresha.
The tickets, priced at Rs. 49, are available at K.C. Das, Church Street, Café Coffee Day, Jayanagar, Sankar's, SBI Road. For details call 55344444.
