Gospel rocks

Kiwi band Red Rain had the audience rocking to gospel lyrics

Rock and gospel. Many scoff at this combination. But, Kiwi band Red Rain makes it attractive. Although Red Rain's songs are replete with Biblical references, the band's sound is rock — pure and perfect.

The band performed at the Unwind Center recently and the giant screen at the basement auditorium displayed the lyrics. Their first song had lines like this: `Living life with You is where I want to live'. It is a love song; but not an earthy one. If there were doubts still about the tenor of the songs, Red Rain and Oasis were conclusive pointers. "I see Red raining down on me... On my knees Red rescued me". Red refers to the blood of Christ, which, Christians believe, was shed for mankind. Oasis exhorts the listener to keep to the narrow road that leads to salvation.

For rock aficionados

Is Red Rain preachy? Not a bit. Their words may be Christian, but their music can appeal to any rock aficionado. Curiosity and nothing else led me to attend their next concert at Geoffrey's pub. "Surely, they would sing some covers. They would have to," I told myself. I was proved wrong. They stuck to their own compositions — the Christian ones, that is. When someone sent across a shopping list of cover requests, lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist Michael Turner said, "We don't play these." Not wanting to disappoint the requester, he asked, "Are there musicians here who would like to play these songs"? As a silence greeted him, he went back to singing his own songs.

Between songs, Michael even spoke against excessive drinking and said "drugs never made anyone a winner". The Reds know how to hold the audience's interest. At Unwind Center and Geoffrey's, they invited them to dance. The best leg-shakers were given away copies of their latest album, New Day.
