CDs on a variety of topics is what you find at this exhibition

A new craze is sweeping across town these days and it has nothing to do with clothes, gizmos, jewellery or accessories. This one relates to interactive CDs. And, the ongoing computer CDs expo at Jayam Hall on Race Course Road organised by Dove Multimedia Pvt Ltd is proof of it.

There's little wonder why people are inclined to buy CDs — they promise a virtual learning experience. The mathematics software makes learning multiplication tables a joyous experience while another enables you to take a virtual tour of the country and learn about everything from its landscape to people.

Helping you learn English is a CD that comes with audio-visual aids..

"We have a collection of educational CDs that caters to students of the kindergarten to Class XII. Also CDs on nursery rhymes and stories for children," says H. Ismail, stall-in-charge at the exhibition.

There's something for everyone. If you are an adventure freak, choose from CDs on racing to simulation to role-play to strategy games. A lot of theme-based CDs such as Shrek 2, Cricket 2000, Jurassic Park, Prince of Persia and 3D animation games also find a place at the exhibition.

English tutor, a package of four plus one CDs is priced at Rs. 850. There are also foreign language tutors to help you learn French, German and Spanish via CDs. The Oxford talking dictionary (Rs.250), in which each word is accompanied by a visual is also on offer.

In study materials, choose from preparation guide CDs for CAT, GRE and other competitive exams. CDs on classical music, learning the guitar and history of the world (for school students). Subject CDs for students of Class IX are also available. CDs on word power, synonyms, yoga, self-cooking, crosswords ... name it and you have it there.

The 32-volume Encyclopaedia Britannica (2005 version) compiled into six CDs is available for Rs. 2,000.

"By going online, one can also update the 2006 version as and when it is released," Ismail adds. For Rs. 2,350, you can buy a compilation of 500 maps sourced from the National Geographic channel. CDs on the Discovery Channel's science-related programmes on insects and mammals have also been stocked.

One can also find material on management topics such as business plan, personality and skill development, and a CD on interior designing which comes with 7,500 readymade home plans. Computer-based tutors on visual basic, languages C and C++, Java 2 and red hat Linux (7.2) are also available. "We also have a horoscope CD that costs Rs. 1, 050 and is compiled in seven languages," the stall-in-charge says.

The exhibition is on till May 2 and is open between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.
