The Magic of Baburaj

Relive the evergreen melodies of Malayalam film music

M. S. Baburaj was an integral part of what could be called the Renaissance of Malayalam film music. He provided the glitter, a new dimension to music that is fresh and alive even today.

With subtle Hindustani touches and use of the ghazal style, Baburaj's tunes blossomed like countless bright flowers. It was springtime of music with G. Devarajan and V. Dakshinamurthy in tow.

He was one who loved music so intensely, was intoxicated by its charm, went on singing, creating music, forgetting the cares of the world around him. In every song there was something special, a kind of Baburaj touch that generations of music lovers have cherished.

The collection of Baburaj's film songs, in three cassettes, is aptly titled `Pamaranam Pattukaran (HMV, Rs. 120.00). Music came naturally to this gifted musician.

His songs were simple, direct from the heart, always melodious. He always preferred to be known, remembered as an ordinary singer who sang from his heart, rather than his musical erudition.

There are 52 songs of this master composer in this collection with different lyricists, beginning with `Pranasakhi njan verum oru pamaranam pattukaran... .' (Pareeksha) and includes classics like `Thamasamenthe... ' (Bhargavi Nilayam), `Kaneerum Swapnangalum... ' (Manaswini), `Thaliritta Kinakalthan... ' (Moodupadam), `Akale Akale Neelakasham... ' (Midumiduki), `Chandrabimbam... ' (Pullimaan), `Surumaezhuthiya... ' (Khadija) and a whole lot of lovely songs that we had often put in the backburner of our minds.

Included are those haunting melodies like `Anuraganatakathil... ' (K.P.Udayabhanu) `Inakuyile... ' (P. B. Sreenivas) `Kadale Neelakadle... ' (Talat Mehmood), `Suryakanthi... ' (S. Janaki), `Kanmani Neeyen... ' (A. M. Rajah) and some of those popular, peppy numbers like `Kadalivazhakayilirunnu... ' (Jikki), `Kalyanarathriyil... ' (P.Leela), `Manjadikili myna... ' (Jikki) etc.

Relive all this and more and experience the magic touch of this gifted musician.

Grab this album and add this treasure to your collection.

K. P.
