Rocking the ramp

The collection by the students of NIFT was a testimony to inventiveness and creativity, writes MINI ANTHIKAD-CHHIBBER

BLACK & WHITE The show was an irresistible combination of the dramatic, cool and comfortable Photos: Arun Roy Chowdhury

The buzz in the air was unmistakeable. They were the class of 2005 presenting their graduation projects. While zillion students graduate each year, these students were different as they were graduates from the National Institute of Fashion Technology and their projects were some truly inspirational and creative outfits sported by delicious models including the lovely Alicia Raut.

When you are thinking of more than 50 collections, you would be forgiven for a wee bit of fashion fatigue, but the show was so perfectly choreographed and the collections had that major wow effect that one was just constantly and pleasantly surprised. Whoever said fashion shows are not for the streets can go and eat coke for there were quite a few wearable collections like Shubra Choudhary's Gypsy Clan with the flirtatious skirts and innovative footwear, Archana's Zoe - the Colours of Life where the traditional Kutch embroidery took on a trendy aspect and Geetika Kumar's By Default among others.

Automobiles supplied inspiration for the on-the-go designers with Seema Doshi's F1 Live being the pick of the lot. Rajesh More's Om Namah Shiva was a tribute to the original Rastafarian - Lord Shiva as the models walked the ramp with dumroos and trishuls to the hypnotic beat of Goan trance.

Ishita's Anhad, transcend existence was delightfully girlie with the most darling crochet shoes and caps. There was a bit of fetishism in the warrior women combination of leather and silk in Rohini's She comes and she conquers. And Pramod's 9 to 5 brought naughty fantasies to life as the models demurely walked in long enveloping robes of lawyers and doctors only to reveal little mini-skirts under them!

Ritu Saluja's Aurelia, which was the first collection to be showcased, was divinely dramatic with the most intricate detailing while Tanu Priya Gupta's Baffled Spirit had children dressed like children rather than miniature adults.

Inspiration was drawn from diverse areas - computers (the super smart Fashion@100 MB/Sec), Geishas, the Crucifixion (The Eternal Occult) and cross dressing (Uomo Fatale). While winners were declared in different categories - the true winners were the students who were unstinting in their cheers for their peers as they came together for an evening of high fashion and fun unlimited.
