Don't judge a book by its cover, or the title for that matter. For, if you do, Chronicles of a quality detective might pass off as another action-packed book penned by an Ian Fleming wannabe, which is just what it isn't. The book has been penned by Dr. Gondhalekar, dean, Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, Mumbai, and Payal Sheth, former student at the Institute and currently employed with the Taj Group of Hotels.

The fictional ring to the title comes from Gondhalekar's childhood passion for Sherlock Holmes' novels.

"I was fascinated by Holmes' techniques based on observation and deduction. I wanted to grow up to be somebody like the detective but crime, unfortunately, wasn't my area of interest," he said in a humorous speech. "However, I could apply these problem solving techniques to real life situations in the manufacturing industry. And they worked."

The book consists of eight `stories' that describe real life case studies concerning quality management. Solutions are derived through a technique called `Differential Diagnosis'. "The book is written in an easy-to-read-style.

The stories are dramatised through the medium of a professor and protégé relationship to better explain the quality control principles," reveals Payal Sheth. Reading excerpts from the book, Sheth outlined how voluminous data can be simplified to identify core issues, which in turn provide quick and accurate solutions to problems.

Easy reading

The book was released at a simple function held at Crossword. Speaking on the occasion chief guest S.R. Tulasi, Vice-President, ITC Bhadrachalam Paper Boards Ltd, praised the contents of the book and said the techniques can also be used to solve problems faced in day-to-day life besides their utility for the manufacturing industry.

The other chief guest for the evening was Sabyasachi Patnaik, factory manager, Asian Paints, who unwrapped the first copy for the media.
