The book "My Friend, The Sea", authored by Sandhya Rao, will be launched with the first copy presented by Andal Damodaran, honorary general secretary, ICCW, Tamil Nadu to Erwin Wendland, Consul, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chennai. Readings in English and Tamil will follow.
Educationists and aid workers engaged in rehabilitation efforts among children affected by the tsunami will then participate in a discussion.
Child's experience
On December 26, 2004, coastlines over the world were struck by a devastating tsunami. "My Friend, the Sea" is the story of a child caught in its aftermath on the south-eastern coast of India. It could be the story of any child, anywhere, whose life is closely linked with Nature.
The story speaks in the voice of a child from a fishing village, bringing the experience close, making it real. It follows his feelings as he tries to cope with horror and uncertainty, moving between memories of the past, bewilderment about the present and hope for the future.
Message of hope
With its cathartic flow of acceptance and healing, the story offers a way for children to come to terms with natural calamities.
Warm photographs taken by Karuna Sesh and Pervez Bhagat reinforce images of bonding between water and sand, and child.
The Tamil translation by Shubashree uses colloquial speech echoing a child's vocabulary, presenting a child's world view. The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chennai has supported the publication of the book in English and Tamil by Tulika Publishers.
