Magic mysticism

Iranian cinema continues to weave its magic and today the Hyderabad Film Club is screening a Dariush Mehrjui's The Cow (1969). The director of movies like The Pear Tree, Sara and Pari brings a dash of Italian neo-realism to this enchanting fable. The story is set in a small village in Iran. Masht Hassan cherishes his cow more than anything else. When he leaves the village for a while, the cow mysteriously dies and villagers knowing that Hassan would be shattered, dispose off corpse and tell Hassan on his return that the cow wandered off. Hassan is grief-stricken and begins to slowly convincing himself that he is his beloved bovine. The Cow won great critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival after it was smuggled out of Iran in 1971. The film would be screened at Sri Sarathi Studios at Ameerpet at 6.30 pm.
