All for the players

Indian coach, Harinder Singh says he is pleased with the body language of the players who are now in Hyderabad for the 40-day preparatory camp for the Junior World Cup.

Harinder who is himself a former Indian Airlines player, says the focus in the camp will be on three areas - utilising the chances during the matches, improving the rate of penalty-corner conversions and avoiding miss-passes on the field. "In a World Cup, you just cannot hope for success if there are missed chances and bad passes," he asserts.

Every effort

Harinder says that modern hockey is all about peak physical fitness levels. With the help of trainer Dr. Saju Joseph and the team doctor for the camp - Dr. Bhaktiar Choudhary - efforts will be made to see that the boys are in good shape.

"The potential amongst the players is good. But, hockey is a team sport and it would be unfair to depend on a couple of individuals. The presence of some players who had already represented India Seniors is important and I hope they motivate the juniors," Harinder says.

Harinder is optimistic of India retaining the World Cup if only the team showed the required consistency.

"Essentially, the main objective of the camp will be to establish a perfect blend of defence and attack. I am fully aware that India won the Junior World Cup last time by playing an aggressive game and we have to try to replicate that feat again," he says.

Commenting on the need for a psychologist, Harinder says that it would be definitely very good for the players. But he would have to wait and see how things shape up. " I am ready to take all possible help, from all quarters, to see that the players get the maximum benefit and thereby perform well," he says.
