STILL A SUPERSTAR Amitabh Bachchan will be featured on the BBC's Talking Movies
This week, BBC World's Talking Movies pays tribute to Amitabh Bachchan. This actor's career spans 35 years with over 150 films to his credit, including hits like Deewar, Sholay Black and Dev.
Bachchan was in New York recently to receive a tribute to his film career from the American Film Institute. That's when the actor was also interviewed by Tom Brook where he said: "It's always a great honour to be recognised by an institute that comes out from the west. I'm a bit surprised that the Americans would take such an interest in Indian cinema."
About increasing viewer ship for Indian cinemas in foreign countries, Amitabh said: "A better system of marketing. I think our systems are very individualistic, we're perhaps not aware of the potential of how films need to be marketed."
Asked if he Indian films had to be less rigid in their approach to issues such as sex and morality in order to gain international acceptability, Bachchan replied: "That isn't the only ingredient that makes them acceptable in other parts of the world. Yes, Western cinema does have a greater permissiveness, but I don't see any necessity for loosening our morals, so to say, just to accommodate a new territory."
Talking Movies, the weekly film review and magazine show presented by Tom Brook, will be telecast at 10 p.m. on May 5 and 8 a.m. on May.
