Do's
Have a balanced diet.Eat lots of fruit and vegetables (at least 5-7 servings a day)
Eat a low calorie, low fat and high fibre diet like a variety of grain products, especially whole grains. Eat more fish, beans, pulses, and lean meat.
Maintain ideal weight and a narrow waist.
Walk regularly for at least 45 minutes 4 to 5 days a week.
Enjoy hobbies and vacations, practice meditation and yoga for mental relaxation. Build up social support. .
Sleep better.
Watch your BP, cholesterol and sugar. Pledge a lifetime commitment to your medicines for high BP, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease.
Consult your doctor immediately if you have symptoms like chest heaviness or breathlessness on walking.
Don'ts
Smoking
Soft drinks, sweets, pastries and cakes should be kept to a minimum. If you drink alcohol, limit it to one drink a day if you are a woman and two if you are a man.
Reduce salt in your diet.
Do not become a "Couch Potato". Avoid using lifts or vehicles whenever possible.
Avoid social isolation.
Do not ignore symptoms like gripping pain in the chest, arms or back with uneasiness, sweating and nausea. It can be a heart attack!
