I know people will come to see Sunny and he has a towering personality but I have a sizeable role in the movie

Remember O O Jaane Jaana, those staccato lines, that wash board abdomen of Salman Khan?

The song also gave Salman a new voice - Kamaal Khan. Songs like Suno To Deewana Dil followed and the London-based singer found a home in India.

However, more than seven years and many a private album later, Kamaal hasn't moved beyond Salman's voice identity.

This coming Friday, he is switching sides. With Rahul Rawail's Jo Bole So Nihaal he is turning to acting.

"There was not much happening on the singing front," admits Kamaal. He says he was always confident about his acting skills, having being of part of many music videos.

"I also got offers in the past but I wanted to fully exploit my singing talent."

He asserts he is a trained singer having learnt both Western classical and Hindustani classical music.

"This time I could not say no to Sunny and Rahul."

Negative character

In Jo Bole... , he is playing the lead negative character Romeo opposite Sunny Deol. Isn't he a soft choice?

"You don't have to look deadly to indulge in nefarious activities. Romeo is a mercenary. He is a polished villain who relies more on his mental strengths. There are not many fight scenes in the movie. I know people will come to see Sunny and he has a towering personality but I have a sizeable role in the movie." He doesn't have any song in the movie. "In Hindi films, villains are not supposed to sing. I have a song in the album though," he quips.

However, Kamaal shows faith in the industry on the blurring boundaries between positive and dark shades.

"I already have some offers for some positive roles. I don't think these are times when actors are typecast on the basis of their first roles." Kamaal shares his wish to work with Madhuri Dixit but admits, "I think it's too late. I am a bit too young for her."

Kamaal sports a much more toned body these days. "The credit goes to Salman. He introduced me to all the exercises but I used to do boxing during school days. This has helped in the movie."
