* Sudha Kannan from Velachery wanted recipe for vatha kuzhambu recipe.
* S. Jayalakshmi has sent the following recipe:
Soak large lemon size tamarind in half a glass of lukewarm water for an hour. Extract the juice using approximately three glasses of water. You can filter it to remove tiny pieces of tamarind.
Add one tbsp of crystal salt and two tsp of sambhar powder and boil it. In a separate pan put one tbsp of oil, sauté one tsp of mustard seeds, one tsp of fenugreek (vendium), one tbsp of toor dal, one tbsp of channa dal and six red chillies and add these to the boiling tamarind juice.
Vegetables to be used: use either six ladies fingers or four brinjals or two drumsticks or 100 gms onions. Please note use any one of these vegetables and not all together. For better taste, the onions can be fried in two tbsp of oil and when they turn pink, add two tsp of sambhar powder before putting it into the tamarind juice for boiling.
According to Jayalakshmi, this is a delicious dish but with the least nutritional value.
Regarding Saroja Padmanabhan's query about cowhage or Mucuna Pruriens used to treat Parkinson's; she can get cowhage capsules in any chemist shop or department store. They are known as Kapi Kacchu and available under the brand name of Himalaya. Each capsule contains 250 mg extract of cowhage seeds. It is a nervine tonic also useful in treating diseases of the urogenital system.
* S. Kalpana from Velachery suffering from Parkinson's was advised to eat Blueberries and wanted to know where she could get them. Shrikant Ram from Eco Nut says that blueberries are not available in Chennai, but he can get them and also blueberry muffins from Kodaikanal in June. At present he only has blueberry jam. He also recommends whey water for Parkinson's patients, which is easy to make at home.
