Booked to the brew

Book Café provides the option to laze around with your favourite bestseller

BETWEEN THE LINES: Time to flip through at the Book Cafe

All the glory of the world would be buried in oblivion had God not provided mortals with the remedy of books. So said Richard De Burry.

Sandeep Dutt, CEO, EBD Book Café Private Limited, seems to agree. The Book Café, situated in 14 States, with five outlets across Delhi alone, acts as a place one can regularly meet up with like-minded people and get involved in book meets, book clubs and book launches.

"It all started in 1932 with the English Book Depot in Dehra Dun. For years, it remained a book depot. Then we decided to change the look and introduced the concept of co-location and co-branding. We tied up with the Variety Book Depot, and what started as a dream has now spread its branches all across India," says Dutt.

At Book Café, you can browse through books over a cup of coffee, or laze around with your favourite read, or simply chat with friends. The belief is that selling books from Espresso bars and other such shared locations facilitates growth in book sales.

The 5000 titles available as hard copies, and the 60,000 other titles, which can be browsed online, include subjects like fiction, romance, children books, literature, art and culture. There is a "Guide to Good Schools of India", written by Dutt himself. The book is a result of his search for a school for his children.

Every book at EBD Book Café has a unique dial-up book number, which helps in tracing the book from the time it is sold. "The dial-up number helps us in knowing the reading habits of a particular customer, on the basis of which we offer him new titles," informs Dutt.

This is a general bookstore that prides itself on stocking something for everyone. "We are not specialists. We are like the family doctor, who cures every member of the family," avers Dutt.
