Sweet, not sugary
Here come desserts you can relish, in plenty, forgetting all the warnings given by your doctor about blood sugar levels and calories. And don't be scared of visiting a dentist, as these sweet offerings are not going to harm your teeth either. Believe it or not, the Stevi0cal Low Calorie Dessert Festival promises desserts that are high on sweets but low on calories. On till May 21 at Bisque, Central Arcade, DLF Phase II, Gurgaon, the festival is a chance to choose from a range of assorted cookies, pastries, mixed fruit tarts, French hearts and donuts, all made from Stevi0cal, a low calorie sweetener, derived from Stevia extract.
"With the accent on health, consumers are increasingly opting for low calorie desserts. We are going to provide them low calorie cookies, tarts and puddings," says Sanjay Kumar Roy, General Manager, Bisque.
Herbal sweetener
For those who don't know much about this herbal sweetener, Stevia in its pure form is devoid of any calories, carbohydrates, fats and has no effect on blood sugar levels. In the Orient and Latin America, folk applications for the Stevia plant are diverse, including aiding digestion, nourishing the liver, stimulating alertness and also skin care. It has been used a natural sugar substitute in a wide variety of food products including soft drinks, desserts, yogurts, snacks, even processed fish and meat.
Right now, the confectionary outlet is stocking all its desserts, including almond pie, blueberry cheese cake, apple crumble, lemon moots and cherry tart, in both the varieties: those made with sugar and those made using the low calorie sweetener.
In some desserts like cookies and apple crumble, it's easy to differentiate between the sugar and the sweetener, while in others such as cherry tart and caramel custard, the sweetener has substituted sugar to a great extent. Anyway, we all know where the proof of the pudding lies.
