A simple, yet strong, Tulasi makes it to the IAS in her very first attempt, says P. Sujatha Varma

Success is her obsession. Meticulous and sharp, she likes to be organised. Giving 100 per cent to whatever she does is the style of Maddineni Tulasi who secured 44th rank in the Union Public Service Commission examination and is poised to enter the Indian Administrative Service. "As a child, I was always fascinated by the sight of people thronging a district Collector for solution to their woes," she says. Get her engaged in a tete-e-tete and the prospective civil servant comes across as a strong individual with a mature outlook. She is starkly simple too.
"Success was anyway a foregone conclusion to me," says the 23-year-old girl who is a great source of inspiration to others. Family is of utmost importance to her and learning the right values from childhood has certainly helped her mould her personality in accordance with the demands of her prospective assignments.
Bookworm
"I was very studious and loved reading books. Constant attempts by my games teacher to make me play failed, as I always preferred curling up in some corner with a book in my hand. If Enid Blightons ignited my creative urge, Nancy Drews acclimatized me to the lanes and by-lanes of the USA. Hardy Boy sand Famous Five were other favourites which I loved sharing with my two younger sisters Lakshmi and Manasa," she says recounting the pleasures of childhood.
"I was good in economics. So deep was my bond with books that I used to barter them for solving an economics problem for my friends," she recalls with a glint in her eyes. At the threshold of a more focused journey, Tulasi is committed to making sure things are just right. Books, pillion riding, family and cooking are a major source of happiness for this self-driven girl with loads of confidence.
.
Tulasi, surprisingly, never went to a college. She straightaway joined the foundation course for Chartered Accountancy as soon as she completed her 12th grade in Atkinson School in the city.
She did her B.Com privately from Nagarjuna University. Unlike those knowledge freaks who move to Delhi or Hyderabad for "gaining foothold" to appear for the civils, she did the magic sitting pretty in our very own Vijayawada.
Praise for The Hindu
And, she has a word of praise for The Hindu. "The day is never complete for me without reading The Hindu. I advise the aspirants of civil services examination to read The Hindu thoroughly. If this is done scrupulously, half the preparation is done."
Family bond
Listening to good music is a pastime. "Sirivennela is an all-time favourite. Though going to a movie is rare, I ensure not to miss quality films." Anand is one film she cannot stop raving about. The big news might have brought defining moments that capture the quintessential pleasure of being an achiever. But, Tulasi is raring to go, to explore newer horizons.
