Booze `n' brains

Brain Drain generated a lot of enthusiasm with the pubbing community in town

It happens in Europe and US and closer home, in Mumbai and Bangalore. And we are talking about the pub quiz— an affair designed to tickle grey cells over a pint of beer. Hyderabad had its first brush with the same last weekend. The venue was Sixth Element. Phat Phish, folks who promoted Rabbi, were elementary in bringing the show to town. And the audience gathered for the Brain Drain had a rocking time, answering questions between music breaks.

If DJ Shweth had a stack of fresh progressive sounds from UK, emcee Anjaan from Bangalore brought along questions, on subjects ranging from geography, current affairs, history and music. From the `name the capital of Iceland' to `what does the abbreviation AWOL stand for', the questions got the teams, read tables, cracking with answers, while the white board flashed scores after every round. The quiz was complete with rapid-fire rounds with loads of freebies, from beer to the entire liquor and food billing on the house for the winning team.

"This is similar to Booze and Brains, the quiz event in Bangalore at Night Watchman held every Thursday. There you find people doing Google search on their hand sets for the questions," says Gopi of the winning team. Plans ahead for the do is that, MC Anjaan plans to add audiovisual rounds, music clippings and more, as the pub is planning on a repeat do. "The response has been amazing. We might make it a regular Friday feature," says Shiv Prasad, partner Sixth Element. Looks like there is a lot more you can do over a pitcher, in coming days.
