BATTLE LINES: Actors delve into themes of war and patriotism in In Times of War
Vivek Madan's In Times of War opens again for a three-show run at Ranga Shankara this weekend after five earlier shows. Comprising two 35-minute plays, one Hindi, Ek Kadam ka Faasla by Kunal Sharma, and The Army Doesn't Need You by the Bangalore-based Ajay Krishnan, the productions star Munish Sharma and Raza Hussain.
Ek Kadam ka Faasla tells the story of two warring heroes who find themselves caught in a trench in no-man's land. Each soldier brings his own brand of patriotism lending a window to soldiers' psyche and motivation in a play that mixes Urdu with Hindi and recreates the outdoor settings.
The Army Doesn't Need You is a companion to the earlier play and is set in an imaginary war; it takes apart ideals of courage, patriotism, leadership and teamwork while maintaining a black humour.
Vivek admits that the challenging themes of the plays proved a "bit of a wild goose chase in the beginning, but then we sat down with some colonels and got together our facts. From there we got our direction, though the actors took some time to get into the whole discipline and respect mode."
With five shows behind them already, the production has evolved since its initial run, says Vivek. "The actors are maturing characters now, they are more enhanced; it's like peeling an orange to get to the flesh," he elaborates.
Tickets at Rs. 100 are available at Crosswords, Opus, Supermarket on Brigade Road and the venue. Shows on May 20, 21, 22, at 7.30 p.m. Call 98452-72215 for details.
