The great depression
The Hollywood honchos are a worried lot as the beginning of summer is turning out to be disaster at the box-office. For the first time in eight years, the first two weekends in May have failed to see any film open well. "XXX-2' has collected only $24.3 million in 17 days. Ridley Scott's "The Kingdom of Heaven", a $130-million film, has turned into an epic disaster as it fetched only $35.1 million in 10 days, while the next big hope "House of Wax" has melted down to $21.9 million in 10 days! Remember that every year at least one film has grossed over $100 million in the first two weeks of May. It is the worst ever slump this time and analysts attribute it to the poor content of the movies. Meanwhile, studio bosses are pinning their hope on George Lucas' "The Star Wars Revenge of the Sith", which is darker, scarier and better than the earlier versions, according to TIME magazine. The hype surrounding the film is awesome with people likely to absent themselves from work in the U.S. to catch the final saga of "Star Wars" this weekend.
