Kabir Lal returns to Telugu cinema to work for the first time with a motion control camera

CAMERA MAN Kabir Lal takes a shot

He started as an assistant cameraman in the Telugu film industry and rose to become one of the best cinematographers with a long stint in Bollywood. Presently he is working for Gita Arts after a gap of 13 long years. He is none other than the son of noted cinematographer S.S. Lal - Kabir Lal. The film is Andarivadu being produced by Allu Aravind. A chat with the ace cameraman

Your relationship with the Telugu film industry...

My father S.S. Lal worked for several Telugu films as a cinematographer. Basically we are from Guntur, so I have an emotional closeness with Andhra Pradesh as well as the film industry in the State. I treaded the path shown by my father and made my debut with Bhairava Dweepam. Earlier, I started my career as an assistant cameraman with Chiranjeevi-starrer Intlo Ramayya, Veedhilo Krishnayya . Later, I provided special effects for other Chiranjeevi starrers like Rowdy Alludu and Mugguru Monagallu. . This is the first time, I am working as a full time cinematographer for a Chiranjeevi's film.

Thrill for audience

We learnt that you are using motion control camera for this film...

To my knowledge for the first time such camera is being used in India now. We can shoot through two characters from a single camera. Generally we shoot such scenes in a steady pose. In fact, I wanted to make the people believe that there are two Chiranjeevis. When both the characters appear in a particular scene, the audiences could watch two different persons touching and meeting with each other. The camera moves along with both of them. The audiences will have a great feeling to watch such scenes.

How do you feel while working for a Telugu film after a blockbuster like Taal in Hindi...

After a gap of 13 years, I got an opportunity to work for a Telugu film. That proved a boon for me, because I have got an opportunity to work with an advanced technology. Working on a motion control camera is very rare and such technology was not used even in Hindi films. It is a great experience for me.

To turn director

You earned name and fame in Bollywood as a cinematographer. Do you have any more targets left there.

Not as a cameraman, but as a director. I prepared a good script and am planning to direct that subject soon. That project will come after doing two or three Telugu films here. Almost all our family members are cameramen. So, I wanted to take up the project and prove myself not only as a cameraman but also as a director.
